What Is a Financial Planner?

Blank stares. Silent moments. Quick changes to the topic of conversation.

The usual responses to the statement ‘I’m a financial planner’.

So what does a financial planner even do?

It’s a question not even financial planners are good at answering. The professional (and boring) may state ‘I work with pensions and investments’. The jovial and confident may retort ‘I make dreams come true’.

The best answer I can give is that ‘I help people align their money to what’s important to them’ … still a bit fluffy.

So, it’s not an easy question even for the qualified to answer. You can see why an innocent family member by the bar at your best friend’s wedding might not quite ‘get it’ (I’ve been there).

The beauty and difficulty of being a financial planner is we are different things to different people.

Even in my specialist area of working with city professionals in their 30s and 40s, people value different things.

To some I’m a money personal trainer helping to kick bad habits, others value the difficult conversations on prioritising competing objectives, and some even value my expert investments, pensions and tax planning.

Maybe I need to lengthen my dinner party response to ‘what is a financial planner?’…
